    I cannot schedule a specific time unfortunately due to other obligations. (I work on call at a local library) If you are a “follower” on UA-cam I think you get a notification. I hope to catch you next time.

      That's ok. I haven't received any notifications, but I just found that there's a setting on the subscription options that apparently will provide notifications in the future. Thanks again. Have you decided yet if you'll be doing either the monthly live or the weekly session next Thursday on the 4th holiday? All the best, Stan

    Darn! I can't believe I missed you live again. I originally had this on my calendar for 1 pm Central time and then found I'd missed it by an hour, and so this week set my calendar for noon, but I still missed it. I had thought you had scheduled for 10am PDT, which would be noon in the Midwest. So it's really 9am your time? Anyway, I'm glad that despite my confusion, the session are all recorded. Are you having one next week on the 4th? Thanks, Stan

    I feel like there's so much red on the cover that it would be the best option to stay with red. I would think maybe off-white would be my second choice.

    Sometimes you can identify first editions by using the various features of WorldCat. This is particularly helpful with older books and those in foreign languages.

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks 25 днів тому

      Great point. I would double check at least one other source though before trusting WorldCat to identify the first edition.

    What type of brush did you use to paint the gold lettering on the spine? Where did you purchase it? Once you start on these letters don’t you have to paint all of them in order to make it look consistent?

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks 25 днів тому

      You can go to any art supply store and get a Liner Brush. There are many brands and types. This one is a 10/0. In this case I probably will paint over them all, but every case must be considered separately. Many times I have just touched up a few letters because the gold matched perfectly. This book's lettering has faded significantly and was likely not real gold. I could have matched the color to blend better, but chose to brighten it instead.

    I've been a subscriber for awhile. UA-cam stopped recommending your channel. Finally this one popped up ! I checked somehow I was unsubscribed ! I subscribed again! You should be proud that in the beginning you were the only channel that I know of that restored books. Now there are several channels doing this. I consider you the best I guess because of your experience and professionalism! I am binge watching where I left off and can not wait to see the next series of videos! Were you using Faber Castell Polychromos pencils ?

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks Місяць тому

      Thanks Gwen. That is not the specific brand of pencils, although Faber Castell is great. I tend to walk into art stores and look for pencils that are "book colored" and buy one or two. I buy the best quality ones available. (Not watercolor). Cheers!

    Do you ever cut the spine liner somewhat wider than the spine so that it goes ca. 1” on each side over onto the board in order to give the joint more inner support?

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks Місяць тому

      Not the liner, but many times I will strengthen the inner hinges with Kozo tissue. No need to go 1 “ onto boards for that. A quarter inch would suffice.

    It's funny I got into board games during covid and have had to fix many cardboard boxes buying used games. Through trial and error I come up with a good method and seeing your video I have been using all the same equipment as you, wax paper and all, even down to the exact same Irwin clamps. Getting into rebinding paperback sheet music books I was about to attempt a very similar method as yours, but was wondering if the PVA glue would stick to itself if I glued the pages first, let it dry, then apply more glue to attach the spine and covers as a whole.

    Very interested in the use of acrylics in book restoration. I have a first of Out of Africa and the front board was apparently left in the sun and almost half of the board is much lighter than the original cover color. Could the use of acrylics help?

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks Місяць тому

      It can, but it can go wrong too. You can't overlap or you create a line and it is hard to get the right depth of color.

    To avoid piercing the thread when you are ‘catching up’ around the tape, pass the eye end first rather than the pointed tip. When darning we use this nearly method every time. It is not any slower if not faster.

    What is the advantage of sewing over tapes rather than a stitch like the Coptic? I’m trying to determine what goes into the decision of one technique over another.

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks 2 місяці тому

      The main advantage is having a strengthening structure that extends over the hinge area. Plus, I think it is faster and easier than Coptic.

    I have a 1929 children's book The Tale of the Long Ear Bat, 30% of its original dust jacket was torn and missing when I acquired it. Should I remove the dust jacket and store it (to prevent further damage)? I display my books in my Victorian House, and I encourage people to pick up a book and look at the contents. I collect children's books because I adore their illustrations and fun stories. Your thoughts on storing the jacket?
